The New Jersey Art Scene
The art scene in New Jersey is HOPPING this season (and not just because of the Easter Bunny!) Whether you’re into monkeys and mountains, the Masters, music or even trying your hand at a little painting (and sipping!), there’s a little something for everyone — including the little ones — when it comes to enjoying art.
First, check out the Montclair Art Museum. It’s FREE from 12–5 p.m. the first Friday of every month! Adults should also try First Thursday Nights at MAM for an evening of free art and dynamic programming, including Draw Along Workshop in partnership with Studio Montclair! Learn to draw from a clothed model or still-life, tours the new center and current exhibitions and enjoy musical performances by community partners. Be sure to check out these and other fantastic happenings in April and beyond!
Also popular is the Montclair Art Museum’s traveling Art Truck, serving up art in a community near you! The MAM Art Truck is a mobile studio in a retrofitted ice cream truck offering art projects and lessons to the community to raise visibility for MAM and its Yard School of Art and bring creativity to underserved audiences. Look for the truck at upcoming festivals and farmer’s markets as well as senior centers and schools.
Another crowd favorite is Morris Museum of art and science. The museum packs in a lot of entertainment throughout the year, including a Winslow Homer exhibit and a must-see lecture entitled BROADWAY & BEYOND: THE MUSIC OF GERSHWIN on Sunday, May 15, 3:00–5:00PM. Immerse yourself in early 20th century Gershwin melodies as performed by the Ampico Reproducing Piano. The museum also has a theater and a large offering of family- and kid-friendly activities, including Tot Tours, Summer Camp, and Kids and Teens Studio Art.
This July, the Morris Museum is reopening its Mega Model Trains Exhibit, an intricate model train set that winds its way around “…a 288-square-foot landscape replicating a bustling city and pastoral scene, equipped with a waterfall, planetarium, and even a sasquatch.” Prepare to spend a LOT of hours here!
Lastly, Newark Museum is currently exhibiting Monkeys & Mountains, Landscapes of Asia, The Harlem Renaissance and The City in the Machine Age and Wondrous Worlds, Art & Islam, among others. Their programming, art and music reflects their mission to offer art and science collections that educate, inspire and transform individuals of all ages of the local, regional, national and international communities.
For a chance to pick up a paintbrush and create your own masterpiece, be sure to check out Bottle & Bottega – New Jersey (Central). Tuesdays are “Make Art – Take Art” events where you create your own AND take home a painting from among the extensive collection by instructor artists! If you’re feeling a little cheeky, check out Naughty Nights featuring a live nude model! For many more “art uncorked” events, visit the B&B website!
